Please find below the Bill of Materials (BOM) for the newly formed SOU SD-45 list group project. This list was formed by looking at prototype photos and trying to figure what could be added to the Kato SD-45 to make it a nicer, more prototypical model for our collections and one that we would be proud to build and own.

One of the pitfalls of producing one of these Internet group projects as we go is that we sometimes find that changes and additions have to be made to the original BOM and this list and project could very well fall in this category. I ask for your patience and understanding while we proceed through the different stages of building the SD-45 especially if we run into changes that need to be made. I will attempt to stay a step ahead of the group and hopefully I can correct any changes before they appear on your screen.  For those of you that have never participated in one of these Internet group projects, I welcome you aboard and I'll attempt to explain how it works....

Each step of the project will be sent to the group along with a high quality scan of the actual model being built. These steps will be numbered 01- however many it takes to complete this model. Some steps will have sub steps, i.e., 02A, 12B. Each sub step will also include a scan to make building the model easier make each step easier to understand.

I encourage each and ever member to ask questions pertaining to the project. I am by no means an SD-45 expert or an expert modeler and I realize there are details that may be missed or steps that can be corrected and made easier.

Hopefully, we can begin work on this model next week so this gives some of you the opportunity to purchase the locomotive or the detail parts needed to complete this unit.
If any of you think the project is moving too fast, please contact me on line since there may also be others that have the same idea as you.

Thinking of doing a SD45 in NS paint?  Here is the list of SD45's that were repainted into the NS scheme prior to their retirement:

1704, 1716, 1766, 1768, 1793, 1795, 1810, 3100, 3106, 3124, 3145

All of the SD45's were retired from active NS service by the end of 1988.

The only other NS SD45's that were in service longer were the nine units (1765, 1766, 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1784, 1800 and 3161) leased to W&LE Railway from May of 1990 until September of 1992. These units were immediately retired when returned to NS.

Notes:

** The Southern SD-45's were divided into groups when it came to certain details and horns were one of these details. Units 3105 - 3159 were equipped with one five (5) chime horn located on the cab roof. Units 3100 - 3104 and units 3160 - 3169 were equipped with two three (3) chime horns, one on each end. Please notice on the SD-45 BOM that the unit we will attempt to model is 3107A and it was equipped with one five (5) chime horn.
++ These style M.U. stands originally appeared on the GP-30 and then were used on the GP-35, GP-38, GP-38-2, SD-35, SD-45, SD-40 and SD-40-2. The later Southern EMD units, GP-49's, GP-40X's and GP-50's did not use this particular style M.U. stands, but rather a standard pilot mounted, plug in M.U. connector.  No GE units ever used this style M.U. stand.
LOCOTROL
** The Southern originally equipped seventeen (17) of it's SD-45's with Locotrol. These units were numbered 3105 - 3121. The seventeen units could be identified as Locotrol units by their white number boards and black numbers, their protruding short hood number boards and also by their two additional antennae, one extra on the short hood roof and the other located on the left side of the long hood between the second dynamic brake fan and the first radiator fan. The Shell Scale set # 103 will be correct for the units equipped with Locotrol.
